The thing I love about Metal is it’s scene of the ancient, timeless or even forgotten lore that is so much apart of the music we love. Coming out of Lithuania is Obtest a Heathen Metal act who through out their 4th album Gyvybes Mendi (Tree Of Life) manages to weave all three of said things into their outstanding Metal attack. Nachtmystium is among other things is a band with an almost unpronounceable name, who has released their 4 full-length album Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1. Harnessing the sola winds of the void, Nachtmystium storm out of the never like some monstrous cosmic creator come to reek havoc on us mere mortals. Raw primitive BlackMetal that’s not afraid to experiment in a freeform sort of way as they include Saxophone and soundscapes into their destructive music. Aussie melodic PowerMetal act Ilium releases their 3rd album Vespertilion, which just happens to have Lord Tim (Dungeon, Lord) on vocals. Kicking proceedings off with the highly skilled Sola Amplexus, that showcases their immense talent. The only thing that lets Vespertilion down is the sadly the production, now don’t get me wrong I love a raw production, but this time it doesn’t do justice to Ilium’s music. Which is an absolute sham as Vespertilion should be a world class album. Never the less the music does overcome this weakness and shows why Aussie’s play the best Metal in the world.... read more>>

Ripping holes in the fabric of space is Italy’s Black Flame with their latest offering Imperivm, which happens to be their 8th album. DeathMetal bartsardry with touches of BlackMetal is what Black Flame delivers; the only thing is that I seem to have heard it all before. That’s not to say Black Flame are a total rip off, it’s just that they are staying true to the DeathMetal principles. Still Imperivm is not enough to satisfy.

Ah BlackMetal! When it’s done right it’s a beautiful thing. Coming out of Sweden are new BlackMetal sensations Zonaria, who bring you The Cancer Empire. While The Cancer Empire is a great listen it is still a fairly standard recording, with most of the musical ideas already been done by other bands. You can hear Dimmu Borgir in the music and you could say its Zonaria just riding on their coat tails but I’m sure that Fredrik Nordstrom had a hand in it to with the production.
